About Berendina Employment Center

Berendina Employment Center (BEC) commenced its activities in the year 2000 with the objective of finding suitable and productive employment opportunities for youth in rural and plantation areas as well as to assist employers to find suitable employees at a minimal cost.

Since commencement of BEC services in the year 2000, the organization has earned an excellent reputation for providing semi -skilled and skilled youth for openings in over 300 companies. BEC connects youth with profitable and productive employment opportunities after carefully analyzing their qualifications and previous work experience. Youth are also provided with required career counseling and guidance and encouraged to attend vocational and other training programs when necessary. BEC offers vocational training scholarships to deserving youth to improve their employability.The details of youth registered with BEC are maintained in the company database and channeled to potential employers who are registered with BEC. Since inception BEC has successfully linked over 13,000 youth with jobs and during 2015, a total of 1827 youth were linked to productive employment opportunities through BEC.

The Head Office of BEC is located at Nawala and at present BEC has 11 branches in locations at Yatiyanthota, Ginigathena, Kegalle, Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya, Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Batticaloa, Galle, Matara and Mullaitivu.

Provision of Jobs

Scholarships for Vocational Training

BEC has provided vocational training scholarships for over 7,500 youth of which over 65% have found productive employment. BEC enrolled youth with the main vocational training providers such as the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA), National Youth Services Council (NYSC) and other Technical Colleges. Youth trainees attending government training centers were provided with travel expenses, whilst those attending private training institutes were paid partial or full course fees depending on the economic situation of these youth.

Career Guidance and Counseling

Career counseling and guidance remains an important aspect of BECs services. BEC provides school leavers and youth direction in the most suitable career paths in line with specific interests and talents. Further, our career counseling and guidance programs also assists individuals facing difficulties in finding employment as well as in retaining employment. Individuals experiencing problems in retaining employment may face work place issues such as; inter personal problems with colleagues, difficulties in adjusting to the role expected from the new employment or difficulties in job transition. In such situations individual career planning and coaching can greatly assist in work reassignment and restructuring. BEC staff provides individual as well as group career guidance and counseling as well as psychometric testing and informal exercises to help individuals discover their goals, talents, interests with more confidence. BEC also provides assistance to govt institutions and other NGO in organizing large scale career guidance programs.

Social Business

Social business is a business model which places importance on meeting social objectives (such as alleviating poverty) while operating in a commercially viable and sustainable manner. Under this theme, BEC has developed partnerships with private sector companies to start production centers in rural areas, while at the same time providing attractive incentives to these companies such as interest free loans, management assistance, trained workforce and premises. Currently, there are 21 such production centers located in different areas in Kegalle district and 260 youth and women are given employment or part time work through these ventures.
